Everything You Need to Know
A New Era in Weight Management
Semaglutide is a prescription medication for weight management that has revolutionised the approach to sustainable weight loss. As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, it mimics the natural hormone that signals fullness, helping you feel satisfied with smaller portions and reduce between-meal snacking.
Unlike traditional weight loss treatments, semaglutide addresses the underlying biological drivers of appetite, making it a powerful tool for those who have struggled with diet and exercise alone.
How the Wonder Weight Loss Drug Works
Semaglutide differs from other weight loss treatments because of how it works. It is a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonist. GLP-1 is a naturally produced hormone responsible for making us feel satisfied after eating.
Natural GLP-1 doesn't last very long, which is why we feel hungry a few hours after a meal. GLP-1 agonists mimic this natural hormone. Since semaglutide is synthetic and structurally modified, it lasts much longer. You feel satisfied after smaller portions and are less likely to snack between meals.
Beyond weight loss, semaglutide also slows gastric emptying and helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular events – such as heart attack – in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Recommended Dosage
The doctor will start you on a low dose of semaglutide injection, and gradually increase it after 4 weeks. The dosage may be increased again after the succeeding 4 weeks depending on your response to the medication.
This gradual titration continues until the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg/week is reached.
Standard Titration Guide
The table below illustrates the standard dosing schedule. Your clinician will tailor this to your individual response.
| Week | Dosage | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1–4 | 0.25 mg | Once weekly |
| Weeks 5–8 | 0.5 mg | Once weekly |
| Weeks 9–12 | 1.0 mg | Once weekly |
| Weeks 13–16 | 1.7 mg | Once weekly |
| Maintenance (from Week 17) | 2.4 mg | Once weekly |
* Individual titration may vary. Your doctor will determine the best schedule for you based on your response and tolerability.
